Burn Center - Burn First Aid

The severity of many burns can be minimized by proper first aid

  1. Stop the burning.
    Stop, drop and roll to extinguish clothing fire. If scalded, remove hot, wet clothing.
    .

  2. Cool the burn.
    Apply cool water to reduce pain and swelling (DO NOT use ice).
    .

  3. Remove burned clothing.
    Cover the burn with a clean dressing or cloth. Do not use salves or ointments.
    .

  4. Cover the victim to keep warm.
    .

  5. Get medical help!
    Come to the Burn Center or nearest hospital.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE SERIOUSNESS OF A BURN.

Degree Characteristics

First:

  • Dry, no blisters.

  • Pink or red in color. 

  • Tender and sore.

Second:

  • Moist blisters; may ooze fluid.

  • Splotchy patches. 

  • White to pink or red. 

  • Very painful.

Third:

  • Dry and leathery.

  • White, brown or charred. 

  • Little or no pain sensation.
