Treatment for Snoring
What causes snoring?
Snoring is the result of an obstruction that restricts the airflow at
the back of the mouth and nose. During sleep, if the tongue, uvula, or
soft palate block the airway it can create the noisy, unpleasant,
and unmistakable sound of snoring. There are a variety of culprits, but
most commonly a person might suffer from:
Who is affected by snoring?
Many people snore occasionally, but for some it can be much
more problematic. This habitual snoring is more common in males,
overweight persons, and usually becomes worse with age.
Not only is it disruptive for the snorer, who can actually awaken him
or herself, but also for the spouse. They too are disturbed by the noise
and sleepless nights.
What options are available
for the treatment of snoring?
A variety of non-surgical treatments may be available for the light
snorer. However, diagnosis may lead to one of two surgical approaches:
-
Uvulopalatopharngoplasty (UPPP) is a
procedure often used in situations of sleep apnea (cessation of breathing), a problem that
is marked by hard snoring then a complete
pause in breathing. UPPP requires general
anesthesia and a hospital stay.
.
-
Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is a
newer surgical option for snoring that is
caused by excessive tissue. While advanced, it is a
much simpler procedure for the patient. It requires between one and four visits
approximately one month apart, and no hospitalization.
What are the benefits of laser surgery?
The benefits of LAUP are outstanding compared to conventional surgical
methods. The procedure is handled on an outpatient
basis and only local anesthesia is required. Each treatment is quick and patients are able to
return to normal activities. All of this adds up to less discomfort
and more convenience for the patient.
In addition and most importantly are the results. Laser treatment is
effective. Snoring is reportedly cured in 85% of patients treated.
Other patients note a reduced incidence of
snoring even after the first and second treatments.
How does LAUP work?
The laser's precision allows the physician to remove excess tissue
around the uvula and soft palate. By reducing any extra tissue in
the throat, you reduce the area that can create an obstruction when sleeping.

Surgeons
may choose LAUP for certain
patients whose snoring is related
to excessive tissues of the soft
palate and uvula.

During
LAUP, the surgeon sculpts the uvula and
surrounding area by vaporizing excess tissue with a laser.

What can be expected
at each outpatient surgery?
The entire procedure can be compared to a visit to the dentist's office.
The patient is treated in a reclining chair, fully awake, with
only a local anesthetic. The surgery itself is
usually complete in 15 minutes.
After the treatment you may resume normal activities or return to work. The
only post-operative pain experienced is a significant soar throat lasting a
few days, which can be relieved by Tylenol or
prescription if stronger relief is necessary.
