Choosing a Rehabilitation Facility

Does the facility have a solid
history providing rehabilitation
services to people with disabilities?

Miller Dwan is a pioneer in the region, providing comprehensive medical rehabilitation services for over 30 years.


Are the rehabilitation programs
accredited by CARF...The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission?

Miller-Dwan is a CARF accredited Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, Category 1- hospital based. Miller-Dwan also has the only Inpatient and Outpatient Brain Injury, Spinal Cord System of Care, and Pediatric Family-Centered Programs in the region accredited by CARF. 
Are the attending physicians in the program physiatrists-trained and board certified in the practice of rehabilitation medicine?
Miller-Dwan's rehabilitation physicians are either board certified physiatrists or experienced in rehabilitation with one who is board certified in spinal cord injury medicine. Combined, our physiatrists have nearly 100 years of rehabilitation experience.


Does the program include
rehabilitation services for children?

Miller-Dwan has specialized inpatient pediatric rehabilitation services, treating children with neurological conditions, and managing spasticity associated with these impairments.

Does the facility's nursing staff
include certified registered
rehabilitation nurses (CRRN's)?

A number of our  Miller-Dwan's rehabilitation nurses are CRRNs, with more 
than 150 years of combined rehabilitation nursing experience.

Does the program have a
strong family component?

Miller-Dwan encourages family involvement through participation in patient therapies and 
care conferences. Families can room-in with the patient whenever possible and pets can 
visit too. Our home-like environment, with community dining areas and lounges, 
encourages socialization and family interaction.


How are the rehabilitation
services provided? 


At Miller-Dwan's Rehabilitation Center:

  • All services are offered on one floor.
    Patient care is provided as an interdisciplinary team.
  • Apartment settings are available creating an environment similar to home.
  • Community outings allow patients to practice social or cognitive skills
    necessary for community re-entry.
  • Therapeutic passes enable the team to assist patients in adapting to
    challenges at home.
  • Referrals to support groups and other agencies for a smooth transition
    back into the community.
  • Therapeutic recreation specialists assist patients in adapting activities
    enjoyed prior to injury.
  • Peer visits by someone who has experienced a similar event and is living independently in the community.

The Brain Injury Program specifically features:

  • A secured unit and safety suite as well as observation beds for patients who need to be closely monitored.
  • Environmental intervention plans reducing undesirable behavior.
  • Special floor beds giving restless patients more room to move safely.
  • One-to-one patient sitter program to assist with patient observation, monitoring, and therapeutic interactions.
  • Orientation groups to improve short term memory.
  • Peer visits by someone who has experienced a similar event and is living independently in the community.
  • Neuropsychological testing. 

The Spinal Cord Program features: 

  • A comprehensive continence program.
  • Home assessments for accessibility and modification needs.
  • Education and referral regarding sexuality and sexual function and
    impairment.
  • Equipment trials including specialty wheelchairs. 
  • Peer visits by someone who experienced a similar injury and is living independently 
    in the community.
  • Ventilator management and weaning.

Does the program offer a wide
range of services and resources?

Miller-Dwan offers:

  • Driving screen with coordination of handicapped Driving Assessments.
  • Orthotist & Prosthetist
  • Pool Therapy
  • Animal Assisted Therapy

Does the facility offer
any specialized services?


Miller-Dwan is a nationally recognized center of excellence in aspects of spasticity management. We are also a leader in bladder function studies and treatment. 
Options for spasticity management at Miller-Dwan include Botox® injections and Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy. We were the first hospital in the region to offer a comprehensive program 
for the Baclofen Pump. 
Miller-Dwan is unique in offering state-of-the-art equipment for bladder function studies 
including computerized urodynamics, pelvic floor stimulation, and pelvic floor biofeedback. 
We also offer several behavioral techniques for managing urinary incontinence.
