Pediatric Program Summary
Our Pediatric Program consists of team members specializing in Pediatric Rehabilitation. We are pleased to see that 100% of our pediatric patients were able to return and remain home. Family education is an essential part of the child’s stay. In order to make the transition home a successful one, families are encouraged to room in and participate in all activities throughout the day. Pediatrics suites are available for our patients and their families. Weekly Patient Family Conferences with the patient, family, team members and physiatrist ensure all patients are involved in their rehabilitation program and appropriate discharge planning. Play is a child’s work and therapeutic play times are scheduled into each child’s day. A licensed recreational therapist coordinates and plans therapeutic play activities throughout the child’s stay.  We have a pediatric playroom and computer room for both patients and families to use. A survey this past year reflected a rating of 4.75 out of 5 related to satisfaction with play during their stay.  We serve as a liaison with the child’s school to facilitate a successful transition back to school. 100% of our children were able to return to school and we have received positive feedback from area schools regarding this transition process. Families served were pleased with their rehabilitation experience and gave us a patient satisfaction rating of 96.7%. We are involved in our community in a number of ways including staff member presentations at area seminars for other providers and Think First Prevention Programs for area school children to reduce the risk of spinal cord and brain injuries.

 Enhancements to our Pediatric Program
Patient – Family Centered Care Standards were developed to enhance the patient -family rehabilitation experience. Our Recreational Therapist is working with a Child Life Specialist to enhance the rehabilitation programming for the children we serve. A Patient Organizer was developed to enhance the patient’s rehabilitation programming.  Initiatives were developed to optimize the involvement of patients in community outings and evening activities. There are individualized play boxes with a list of suggested activities for staff and families, as well as age-appropriate computer games and websites. A safe procedure -free zone is being formalized on the unit. The team has developed a humor cart for staff to utilize during the course of the day for rehabilitation programming.
