Spinal Cord Program
An inpatient program for people of all ages having spinal cord injury or
disease resulting in weakness or paralysis. The program is directed toward
teaching patients to move independently and care for themselves.

Program features
There are special features patients in the
Spinal Cord Program may receive, depending upon their own unique needs.
They may include:

A variety of specialty wheelchair styles are on hand for patients to
examine and try before ordering.

Robomedica which is a state of the art body weight support system for gait training.

Ventilator management for those patients with injuries or disease
causing respiratory impairments and needing ventilator support.

Urodynamic studies for specialized bladder function assessment and
treatment planning.

A comprehensive continence program for many types of bowel and
bladder conditions.

Home assessments for accessibility and modification needs.
-
Education and referral regarding sexuality and sexual function and
impairment.

Referrals to other agencies working closely with persons with spinal
cord injury and disease and their families to help smooth the transition
back to the community.
Services Available
A patient admitted to
Miller Dwan's Rehabilitation Center's Spinal Cord Program receives services from
many experienced members of the Spinal Cord
Team depending upon each patient's individualized needs.
In addition to a
rehabilitation physician, nurses, and a social worker, a
patient may receive services from a variety of
professionals. These services may include: physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, therapeutic
recreation, speech- language pathology,
peer counseling, nutrition services,
continence services, and chaplaincy.
A
variety of other services may be
arranged depending upon the patient's
needs. Comprehensive patient and
family education is also provided.
Admission to the program

Patients are admitted to the program by a
physiatrist, a doctor specializing
in rehabilitation.

A patient's doctor usually
consults a physiatrist once the patient's injury or disease is stable, but still causing functional
limitations.

Patients
can be admitted to the program if
the physiatrist believes they can
learn the skills required to care
for themselves and/or the
knowledge to direct others in
providing their safe care.
